Daytime Closings of 4th Street This Week

Beginning as soon as Monday, Feb. 20, CSX expects to conduct daily closings of 4th Street S.E. between I Street and Virginia Avenue, to allow crews to move a manhole and repave areas of the street. The closings will take place only between 9:30 a.m. and 3:30 p.m.

Update February 27: Closings will continue during the week of Feb. 27-Mar. 3.

Temporary detours will be in place while the intersection is closed. Vehicle access to the temporary Capitol Quarter driveway to 4th Street will be restricted during the closings. Pedestrian access will be maintained. CSX apologizes for any inconvenience that this work may cause.

Lanes to Shift on 8th Street

As soon as Friday, Feb. 17, traffic will be shifted to new lanes on 8th Street S.E., through the intersection with Virginia Avenue, following installation of the Phase II temporary bridge deck over the area to be excavated for the second new Virginia Avenue tunnel.  Drivers are urged to be cautious while traveling through the area.

6th St. Ramp to be Restored to Two Lanes

As soon as Monday, Feb. 20, CSX expects to restore two lanes of traffic on the 6th St. ramp from I-695. The expansion follows completion of new storm drains and other preparations necessary to re-connect the ramp with the new temporary bridge deck that will be installed across the area to be excavated at 5th/6th Street and Virginia Avenue for the second new tunnel.

Saturday Work, February 11

CSX expects to conduct construction-related work on Saturday, February 11, between 7 a.m. and 7 p.m. at locations throughout the Virginia Avenue Tunnel project area. Work on Saturday may include pile drilling, backfilling of existing excavation areas and concrete construction activities at street level. CSX does not expect the work to be disruptive, and will implement mitigation measures to reduce the impact this work may have on neighbors.

5th/6th Street Intersection Closed February 9

CSX closed the intersection of 5th/6th Street, S.E., at Virginia Avenue Thursday February 9, following the re-opening of 3rd Street. The 5th/6th Street intersection will be closed for up to 7 weeks while the existing temporary bridge deck over the excavation for the first new tunnel is removed and the temporary bridge deck for Phase II of the tunnel project is installed.

The 6th Street exit ramp from I-695 was narrowed last week from two lanes to one. This is necessary to allow the installation of new storm drains and perform other necessary tasks to prepare for the transition to the modified 6th Street ramp that will be constructed as part of Phase II of the tunnel project. The ramp will remain one lane throughout the duration of the work in the 5th/6th Street intersection.

More details about this lane change and closing of the intersection is available here on the project website.

This closure is similar to the closure that occurred during Phase I of tunnel construction. Traffic will be limited on 5th Street north of K Street while that intersection is closed. All through-traffic wishing to reach destinations north of Virginia Avenue will be detoured to 7th Street or other north-south connections. Only vehicles wishing to access residences in the 900 block of 5th Street, including the Capper Center, should enter the block. All other vehicles should follow detour signs to L Street and 7th Street for travel north of Virginia Avenue.

While the intersection is closed, detour signs will be placed south of Virginia Avenue on K Street, L Street, 5th Street, 7th Street, and on the westbound lanes of Virginia Avenue S.E. (north of I-695), to direct drivers around the closure. A pathway for pedestrians will remain open across the intersection throughout the period that the street is closed.

Thank you for your patience while we complete this important project.

Backfilling May Temporarily Cause Additional Vibrations

CSX has begun backfilling some of the areas excavated for construction of the first new tunnel as part of the initial efforts to restore the area to pre-construction conditions. Engineering standards require soil to be compacted in place. The CSX team is using industry-standard equipment to complete that work, which includes large, heavy rollers that vibrate while they pass over the soil to be compacted. While residents who live closest to the construction area may feel these vibrations, the vibrations are not strong enough to cause damage to nearby structures. CSX continues to monitor the noise, vibration and air-quality adjacent to the site, and will take necessary steps to ensure that work remains within the established parameters for the project.

We will complete this work as quickly as we can, and apologize for any inconvenience this temporary situation may cause.
