Reminder: Changes to 11th Street Lanes and Sidewalks Jan. 11-15

During the week of Jan. 11-15, changes will be made to the traffic lanes and sidewalks on 11th Street S.E. as construction progress continues. Construction activity will shift from the west (southbound) side of 11th Street to the east (northbound) side, and traffic lanes will be adjusted accordingly. Two lanes will be maintained in each direction near the construction area, and existing multi-lane configurations at the intersections with M Street and Southeast Blvd. will remain intact. The full length of the sidewalk on the west side of 11th Street (which pedestrians can access from L Street) will be reopened to pedestrian traffic, and the sidewalk on the east side will be closed. Drivers and pedestrians are encouraged to be sensitive to traffic-control signs through that area as changes take place.

Water Cut-over on 3rd Street Postponed to Week of Jan. 18

In order to prioritize moving a fire hydrant on 4th Street away from the Capitol Quarter temporary driveway, the previously announced water-main cut-over on 3rd Street between Virginia Avenue and the I-695 overpass has been postponed; it is now likely to occur during the week of Jan. 18. The work will entail saw cutting, equipment noise and lights. Some DC Water customers in that vicinity may experience a water outage. The project team will implement mitigation efforts to minimize the impact of this work, including monitoring noise levels to ensure compliance with DDOT requirements, installing noise barriers to limit sound emanating from the work site and focusing lighting on the work zone. CSX apologizes in advance for any inconvenience this work may cause. More information will be provided when it becomes available.

Temporary Capper Driveway to be Paved

Weather permitting, CSX will pave a temporary driveway from 5th Street SE to the alley behind the Arthur Capper Senior Apartments late this week or early next week. The driveway will be adjacent to the Capper building, parallel to Virginia Avenue. Construction activities will cause noise, especially on the Virginia Avenue side of the Capper building, between 7 a.m. and 7 p.m. We apologize in advance for any inconvenience this may cause. This driveway is being installed to maintain emergency access to the alleyway while tunnel construction is occurring on Virginia Avenue. Plans for the driveway were reviewed and approved by DDOT and the DC Fire Department, and access changes will be reviewed with DC emergency agencies again when construction is complete. Access to the alley from Virginia Avenue SE will be closed when the driveway is completed. Access to the parking garage and loading dock will remain open from K Street SE. This change will be in effect for the duration of the tunnel project.
