Demolition of Old Tunnel Progressing Eastward

The demolition of the old Virginia Avenue tunnel began this week in the 200 block of Virginia and will move eastward as progress allows.

Work could reach the 300 block of Virginia Avenue as soon as Thursday, March 2, or Friday, March 3. Work will take place during the normal project work day, between 7 a.m. and 7 p.m.

Demolition activities will be conducted from within the old tunnel and at street level. Using hoe-rams and other heavy equipment, the roof arch and the southern wall of the old tunnel will be knocked down and removed from the tunnel with bucket loaders, dump trucks and other traditional earth-moving equipment.

The CSX team will continue to monitor noise, vibration and air-quality throughout this process and proactive measures will be employed to minimize disruption or annoyance to the surrounding community as much as possible.

Daytime Closings of 4th Street This Week

Temporary daytime closings of 4th Street between I Street and Virginia Avenue north of I-695 continue this week, to allow crews to move a manhole and repave areas of the street. The closings will take place only between 9:30 a.m. and 3:30 p.m., and are expected to continue through Friday, March 3.

Temporary detours will be in place while the intersection is closed. Vehicle access to the temporary Capitol Quarter driveway to 4th Street will be restricted during the closings. Pedestrian access will be maintained. CSX apologizes for any inconvenience that this work may cause.

Demolition of Old Tunnel to Begin as soon as February 24

CSX expects to begin demolition of the old Virginia Avenue tunnel as soon as Friday, February 24. Work will take place during the normal project work day, between 7 a.m. and 7 p.m. The work is expected to take several months, beginning in the 200 block of Virginia Ave. and moving eastward. After additional preparations are complete, demolition will also be initiated near the Virginia Avenue Park, moving westward.

Demolition activities will be conducted primarily from within the old tunnel, below street level.

The old tunnel, which is located between the recently completed first new tunnel and I-695, must be demolished to make room for construction of the second new Virginia Avenue tunnel. The northern wall of the old tunnel, which is closest to the interstate, will be left in place.

Cross-street Updates

Work continues on installation of the new temporary bridge deck at 5th/6th Street and is expected to be completed in mid- to late-March. The intersection will be re-opened immediately upon completion and inspection of the new structure.

Once the 5th/6th Street intersection is re-opened to vehicle traffic, the 7th Street intersection will be closed for installation of the Phase II bridge deck. That work is expected to take up to 4 weeks. Information about detours will be provided in advance of the 7th Street closing.

Work on installation of the Phase II bridge deck at 8th Street continues while the street remains open to traffic. Additional lane shifts will occur and drivers are encouraged to follow all directional signs and barriers. Work on the 8th Street bridge is expected to require up to 6 weeks to complete.

Pedestrian access will be maintained across all of these intersections while the new bridge decks are installed.
