Reminder: Utility Disruptions

Water-service disruptions are pending next week for the 200 and 300 blocks of Virginia Avenue S.E. as well as Virginia Avenue between 8th and 11th Streets. CSX is working with DC Water to identify as clearly as possible when those disruptions will occur. We will share that information as soon as it is available. Previous disruptions were completed between midnight and early morning hours to minimize the impact on customers. Customers who will be affected by the disruption should also expect to receive advance notices directly from DC Water.

A gas-service disruption also is pending for the 1000 block of L Street S.E. and we are working with Washington Gas to identify as clearly as possible when that disruption might occur. We will share that information as soon as it is available. Customers who will be affected by the disruption should also expect to receive advance notices directly from Washington Gas.

We apologize for any inconveniences these disruptions may cause.

Pedestrian Access on 4th Street and 11th Street

Due to new construction activity, pedestrian access has been closed on the east side of 4th Street S.E., near the intersection with Virginia Avenue and under the I-695 overpass. These temporary restrictions are necessary while we begin work to install the temporary street decks over the tunnel excavation area. When work on the east side is completed, it will be reopened with restored pedestrian access and pedestrian access on the west side will then be restricted while the remainder of the temporary street deck is completed. Similarly, pedestrian access on the west side of 11th Street between the I-695 off ramp and M Street S.E. has been closed while we install pilings and temporary bridge decks, and work on utility relocations. Once the street decks are in place, pedestrian access will be restored on both sides of 4th Street and 11th Street. This same pattern of restriction and restoration of access will occur as we install street decks on 3rd, 5th/6th, 7th and 8th Streets in the future. The schedule for these installations was included in the recent Coffee with Chuck briefing, available on the project website: http://bit.ly/1MDauj9.

Gas-service Disruptions

Washington Gas has informed CSX that it may need to interrupt service to customers in the 1000 block of L Street as soon as the week of August 31. Every effort will be made to minimize the disruption caused by this action. More information will be provided as it becomes available. Customers who will be affected by the outage should also expect to receive advance notices directly from Washington Gas. We apologize for any inconvenience this interruption may cause.

Update on Potential Water-service Disruptions

The previously announced water-service disruptions around the 300 block of Virginia Avenue now are expected to occur September 8 – 10. It may be necessary to interrupt service to residential water customers on two occasions, once to switch service to the relocated water main and once to move individual customers’ water meters. Every effort will be made to minimize the time that water service is not available; previous disruptions in the area lasted approximately three hours. More information will be provided as it becomes available. Customers who will be affected by the outage should also expect to receive advance notices directly from DC Water. We apologize for any inconveniences these outages may cause.

Update on Virginia Avenue from 8th to 11th Street

The previously announced water-service interruptions for DC Water customers in the vicinity of Virginia Avenue between 8th and 11th Streets, S.E. are now likely to occur as soon as September 9. This is necessary to complete the relocation of the water supply on Virginia Avenue from 8th to 11th Street.

Parking Restrictions, 300 Block of Virginia Avenue, S.E.

Beginning Monday, August 31, parking on Virginia Avenue between 3rd and 4th Streets, S.E. will be restricted between the hours of 7 a.m. and 7 p.m. to accommodate the utility-relocation work that is occurring in that block. These restrictions will last for the foreseeable future. We apologize for the inconvenience these restrictions may cause.

4th Street Lane Shifts

Driveway Blockages in 300 block of Virginia Avenue

As a reminder, beginning as soon as Monday, August 24, the western driveway entrance to homes in the 300 block of Virginia Avenue will be blocked during regular work hours (7 a.m. to 7 p.m.). The eastern driveway will remain open during the day, and both driveways will be restored to service outside regular work hours. As work progresses east toward 4th St., the eastern driveway will be blocked while the western driveway will remain open. At all times, one access driveway will remain open. The work is expected to last for about 2 days at each driveway. Temporary barriers and signage will be installed to assist drivers in navigating safely around the work. CSX will accommodate access across the driveways to avoid interrupting refuse collection and other essential services while this work is being done.

These temporary blockages are necessary to facilitate relocation of electrical service and water lines. New electric and water lines will also be installed in the public space in front of these homes during the same period, requiring trenches to be dug in that area. The trenching activity will create noise through the use of trenching and earth-moving machinery.

11th Street Lane Reductions

As a reminder, beginning as soon as Monday, August 31, travel lanes will be reduced on 11th Street S.E., between the I-695 off ramp and M Street S.E., beginning in the southbound lanes. This work will likely last 10 weeks or longer. These restrictions are necessary to allow installation of support-of-excavation pilings and temporary bridge decks. Lane closures will shift as work progresses across 11th Street from west to east. Travel lanes will always be maintained in each direction. Congestion may occur as drivers follow temporary traffic control devices.
