Tunnel Demolition in the 400 block of Virginia Avenue

As a reminder, CSX soon will begin demolition of the old Virginia Avenue Tunnel in the 400 block of Virginia Avenue S.E. Due to the reinforcing from the 1980s tunnel repair in that block, this demolition may produce higher than normal levels of noise. CSX will continue to monitor these activities through our environmental monitoring program and will minimize noise levels whenever possible. We apologize for the inconvenience.

FRESHFARM Capitol Riverfront Farmers Market at Canal Park, Sun., May 7

Plan now to attend the season’s first FRESHFARM Capitol Riverfront Farmers Market on Sunday, May 7, from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. at the southern block of Canal Park, featuring locally sourced fruits and vegetables, meat, cheese, bread, beer, coffee and much more. FRESHFARM is a non-profit that promotes sustainable agriculture and improves food access and equity in the Mid-Atlantic Region by operating producer-only farmers markets that provide vital economic opportunities to local farmers and food producers. Saturday Work, May 6

CSX expects to conduct construction-related work on Saturday, May 6, between 7 a.m. and 7 p.m., primarily at track level. There will be limited activity at street level this week. CSX does not expect the work to be disruptive.

7th Street Intersection Closed

The intersection of 7th Street and Virginia Avenue S.E. was closed on Wednesday, May 3, following the reopening of 5th Street. CSX expects the intersection to be closed for at least 4 weeks. 
  
 While 7th Street is closed between Virginia Avenue and L Street, detour signs will be in place north and south of Virginia Avenue on 7th Street to direct drivers around the closure. A pathway for pedestrians will remain open throughout the period that the street is closed. A map showing detour routes around the closed intersection is available here on the project website.

Saturday Work, April 29

CSX expects to conduct construction-related work on Saturday, April 29, between 7 a.m. and 7 p.m. at locations throughout the Virginia Avenue Tunnel project area. Work on Saturday may include backfilling of existing excavation areas, demolition, excavation and installation of bracing and concrete construction activities. CSX does not expect the work to be disruptive, and will implement mitigation measures to reduce the impact this work may have on neighbors.

Support Barracks Row Taste of 8th, April 29

7th Street Intersection to Close on or around Tuesday, May 2

As a reminder, the intersection of 7th Street and Virginia Avenue S.E. will close on or around Tuesday, May 2nd, following the reopening of 5th Street. The 7th Street closing will allow the installation of a temporary bridge deck across the area to be excavated for the second new tunnel. CSX expects the closure to last at least 4 weeks. CSX will provide regular updates on the progress of the deck construction in the coming weeks and the anticipated re-opening date as it becomes known.
