As soon as March 12th, CSX expects to temporarily close the 5th/6th Street SE intersection with Virginia Avenue for approximately 3-4 months. The closure will allow removal of the existing temporary bridge deck and final street restoration. The timing for the closure and work is dependent on favorable weather conditions. CSX will provide updates as the work progresses.
The 6th Street off-ramp from I-695 will remain open while this work is occurring.
Traffic will be severely limited on 5th Street, north of K Street while the 5th/6th Street intersection is closed. All through-traffic wishing to reach destinations north of Virginia Avenue will be detoured to 7th Street. Only vehicles wishing to access residences in the 900 block of 5th Street, including the Capper Center, should enter the block. All other vehicles should follow detour signs to L Street and 7th Street for travel north of Virginia Avenue. There will be additional parking restrictions on 5th Street while this work is occurring.
While the intersection is closed, detour signs will be placed south of Virginia Avenue on K Street, L Street, 5th Street, 7th Street, and on the westbound lanes of Virginia Avenue (north of I-695), to direct drivers around the closure. A pathway across the intersection will remain open for pedestrians throughout the period that the street is closed.
Illustrations of the roadway configurations during the closing can be found here on the project website. Signs, barrels, barriers and other traffic control measures will be deployed to guide drivers through the area.
CSX urges all drivers to use caution through this intersection and others affected by the Virginia Avenue Tunnel project.
