As you may recall, the District Department of Transportation (DDOT), Advisory Neighborhood Commission 6B and Advisory Neighborhood Commission 6D undertook extensive efforts to refine proposals for the restoration of Virginia Avenue following completion of the Virginia Avenue Tunnel project, with much support from CSX. Those plans were approved by the DC Public Space Committee in 2015. CSX recently produced new exhibits of the plans for display at public meetings and in the community office, and copies of those exhibits are available here on the project website.
The restored Virginia Avenue streetscape will feature more than 350 trees, additional greenspaces, improved lighting, upgraded finishes and a bike path that is separated from the street and the pedestrian sidewalk along the length of Virginia Avenue between 2nd Street and 11th Street.
CSX remains on schedule for completing the Virginia Avenue Tunnel project in 2018, and street restoration will begin early next year as the project nears completion.
