CSX expects to begin demolition of the old Virginia Avenue tunnel as soon as Friday, February 24. Work will take place during the normal project work day, between 7 a.m. and 7 p.m. The work is expected to take several months, beginning in the 200 block of Virginia Ave. and moving eastward. After additional preparations are complete, demolition will also be initiated near the Virginia Avenue Park, moving westward.
Demolition activities will be conducted primarily from within the old tunnel, below street level. Using hoe-rams and other heavy equipment, the roof arch and the southern wall of the old tunnel will be knocked down and removed from the tunnel with bucket loaders, dump trucks and other traditional earth-moving equipment. The CSX team will continue to monitor noise, vibration and air-quality throughout this process and proactive measures will be employed to minimize disruption or annoyance to the surrounding community as much as possible.
The old tunnel, which is located between the recently completed first new tunnel and I-695, must be demolished to make room for construction of the second new Virginia Avenue tunnel. The northern wall of the old tunnel, which is closest to the interstate, will be left in place.
